What lingers in the stillness
I scribbled the first few lines of this poem about 18 months ago, sparked by a small, true memory that surfaced unexpectedly from the distant past. It was always meant to sit alongside a photo. However, I never quite captured that photo.
Recently, I returned to that moment and lived in it a little longer, searching for what else might lie beneath the surface. This is what that memory became.

The Silent Space
I liked the way
you left the radio on
throughout the night
so you were never alone,
even though I lay beside you.
I felt your breath
on my neck.
I love you.
Music filled the space,
the space between us,
shaping our dreams.
Your fingers twitch,
a secret memory,
maybe of me.
Maybe.
I daren’t move.
The night was ours.
I was afraid,
afraid in case you woke
from your dream,
from my arms.
So I stayed still,
still in that moment,
in that silent space,
in that breath
of being alone.
Alone with you.
