If you’re ever passing through Lahardane, take a moment to stop off at the Addergoole Titanic Memorial Park. Situated at the foot of Nephin, it’s a peaceful place that remembers the people from this area who boarded the ship with hope and never came home.
It’s also a reminder that we were, and still are, a nation of emigrants who faced a titanic journey.
I don’t know the full story behind the sculpture, and I prefer it that way. I see a young couple, maybe brother and sister, setting out. I also see a mother holding hands with her child and looking back, wondering if she will be next.

As well as remembering those who lost their lives aboard the Titanic, it asks us to think about those who stayed behind, the families, the neighbors, and the communities shaped by their absence.
The park is quiet, but it doesn’t feel empty, a titanic calm pervading the space.
